PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- After being closed for nearly a year, Multnomah County's Central Library is set to reopen this Friday with major improvements.
County officials shared Wednesday that the library would be reopening with new features and welcoming spaces for the community.
Originally built in 1913, Central Library hadn't been renovated in nearly 30 years and the director of libraries, Vailey Oehlke shared that these new upgrades seek to honor the past and prepare for the future.
“Central Library—beloved by its community for more than a century—is once again open for everyone to enjoy,” said Director of Libraries Vailey Oehlke. “We have an important job as caretakers of this historic building. These thoughtful improvements honor the past while meeting the needs of the present and preparing for the future. Welcome back, and thank you for your patience.”
The long list of upgrades includes new signage and seating, public meeting rooms, enhanced visibility for safety, enhanced and inclusive restrooms, and over 100 new charging ports and outlets for patrons.
