Turnout tracker: How many people have voted in the March 2024 primaries?
AUSTIN (KXAN) — With early voting underway, KXAN is keeping track of how many Texans have voted in the March 5 primary elections.
Voters will choose which candidates will represent the Democratic and Republican parties on the ballot in November’s general election.
Early voting runs from Feb. 20 through March 1. Election Day is Tuesday, March 5.
More than 17.9 million Texans are currently registered to vote, according to the Secretary of State's office. After one day of early voting, around 176,000 votes have been cast, for a statewide turnout of 0.98%. Of all votes, about 65% have been in the Republican primary, while 35% have been in the Democratic primary.
The maps below show turnout in each of the state’s 254 counties, based on data from the Secretary of State’s office. Hover over a county (or tap if using a mobile device) to see the data. You can also search for a specific county in the top left of the map.
Harris County has reported the highest number of votes, with more than 19,000. Tarrant County is second, with more than 10,000. Two other counties have reported more than 9,000 votes: Dallas and Bexar.
The following counties have seen the most votes cast in the Republican primary: Harris (9,795), Tarrant (6,800), Denton (5,228), Collin (4,564) and Bexar (4,504).
The following counties have seen the most votes cast in the Democratic primary: Harris (10,042), Dallas (6,252), Bexar (4,804), Hidalgo (4,016), and Travis (3,933).
The map below shows the share of the vote received by each party in each county. If a county is colored red, more Republicans have voted. If a county is colored blue, more Democrats have voted.
Five counties have surpassed 5% turnout so far: Loving, Lamb, Wheeler, LaSalle and Roberts. Loving County has the highest turnout, at 12.4%.
Turnout is slightly lower than the last presidential primaries in 2020. Republican turnout is currently 0.64% of all registered voters in the state, compared to 0.77% at this point in 2020. Democratic turnout is currently 0.35% of all registered voters, compared to 0.65% in 2020.
Local turnout
Across the 15-county KXAN viewing area, there are 1,732,647 registered voters. More than half of those are in Travis County, while Williamson County accounts for about a quarter of all registered voters locally. About 10% of registered voters in the area live in Hays County.

Turnout locally is highest in San Saba County, at 3.17%, and lowest in Travis County, at 0.68%.
Areawide turnout is at 0.50% in the Republican primary and 0.37% in the Democratic primary.
