KXAN request denied for 911 calls from deadly shooting spree in Austin and San Antonio

AUSTIN (KXAN) — KXAN's request for 911 calls connected with a December deadly shooting spree in Austin and San Antonio was denied by the Office of the Texas Attorney General.

The OAG cited an open records ruling, stating law enforcement agencies can withhold information if the release of the information would "interfere with the detection, investigation, or prosecution of a crime."

KXAN made an open records request with the Austin Police Department in December for calls on Austral Loop in southwest Austin, to help further our reporting into what happened and law enforcement response.

Shane James, 34, is accused of killing six people and injuring three others during a string of violent incidents.

James is facing 10 charges, including multiple capital murder and aggravated assault charges, court records state.

In December, APD identified the victims as Emmanuel Pop Ba, 32; Sabrina Rahman, 24; Katherine Short, 56; Lauren Short, 30; Phyllis James, 55; and Shane James, Sr., 56. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office said Phyllis and Shane James, Sr. are believed to be the suspect's parents.
