Sports Briefs: Redwood wrestlers Hamzia, Stathopoulos earn top MCAL honors
Redwood High’s Ali Hamzia and Luana Stathopoulos stood out as the MCAL’s wrestlers of the year, and six Novato High wrestlers earned first-team honors.
Hamzia, the MCAL and North Coast Section champion at 138 pounds, went 0-2 at the State Meet. Stathopoulos, the NCS girls champion at 140 pounds, placed fifth at the State meet.
Novato led the All-MCAL awards with Diego Ramos (113), John Gramajo (126), Ikaika Madayag (138), Jacob Davis (165), Daniel Stathopoulos (215) and Braeden Carroll (285).
San Marin’s Osuke Toshi (106), Jason Gurrola (120), Akio Suzuki (150) and Jordan Gardner (175) were also first team honorees, along with Archie Williams’ John McKenzie (144) and Alex McKenzie (157), and Tam’s Decker Scholnick (190).
Boys volleyball
Jack Storey had 11 kills and Andrew Shone added nine more as Novato took down San Marin, 27-25, 25-23, 25-12 on Friday. Graham Engleskirchen had six kills, Bryce Wang had 11 assists and Martin Ries served four aces for the Hornets.
Boys golf
Archie Williams’ Nicholas Lillevand shot a 38 during stormy weather at Meadow Club, but San Rafael edged the Peregrine Falcons, 233-234, on Thursday. Logan Dean led the Bulldogs with a 40 and Kai Payne shot a 42.
College softball
Dominican University landed in the islands for a weeklong road trip and wasted no time with a 5-2 victory over University of Hawai’i at Hilo on Friday. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed.
The Penguins’ Melissa Garcia was 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and a stolen base. Shelby Keltner earned the victory for the Penguins (6-7, 1-4 PacWest) pitching four innings and striking out four, while collecting a hit and two RBI from the plate.
