Chris Roemer: If Biden’s political ploys win re-election, Republicans can only blame themselves | COMMENTARY
President Joe Biden might not know what day it is, but one thing he does remember is how buy votes.
It’s an election year and young people are running away from the president. To win them back, he is throwing hundreds of millions of dollars their way in the form of student loan forgiveness.
Of course, that means average, hard-working taxpayers who never attended college themselves or had children who attended college, will have to pick up the tab.
It’s obviously unfair, but there’s nothing more important than Biden’s re-election, even if that means Biden has to defy the Supreme Court, which ruled Biden doesn’t have the authority to waive student loans.
Kind of a strange attitude for the savior of democracy, don’t you think? I guess despotism is only a problem when conservatives practice it.
And where are all those high-minded young people for whom ideals are everything. Those enlightened souls who stand firmly on principle. The ones who are in the street attacking Israel and chanting mindless ditties about the virtues of Hamas.
Heck, polls show one in five Gen-Zers even have a positive view of Osama bin Laden, the individual responsible for the death of thousands of Americans on 9/11. Principle trumps even patriotism and love of country for these noble warriors who fight for everything just and good.
But politicians buying their votes is not a violation of principle these young people are terribly concerned about. It seems there is a practical limit to their idealism — when it impacts their own bank accounts.
Winning back the votes of these callow idealists and other anti-Israel activists is the reason Biden has already walked away from his full-throated support of Israel. Biden has few, if any, guiding principles, so a more complete betrayal of the Jewish State is certainly not out of the question.
As for the southern border, Biden told reporters back in January, “I’ve done all I can do,” but the reality is, the only thing he’s really done of any consequence in three years is reverse the Trump-era executive orders that had things pretty much under control at the border.
Democrats are trying to exploit the failure of Republicans to accept a bipartisan compromise, but even progressives are finding it hard these days to defend Biden’s immigration policies.
Mayors of Democratic cities, overwhelmed by the sheer number of illegal migrants they have to deal with every day, have had enough and are in near revolt.
In New York City, migrants who attack police have grown so brazen they’re flipping the bird to reporters as they walk out of the court house, released on bail.
The American people have had enough, too, and the recent murder of a Georgia nursing student, allegedly at the hands of an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, has confirmed the worst fears of millions of Americans.
So, Biden now seems prepared to use the executive authority he claims he doesn’t have to address the absurdity the border has become on his watch.
Biden is also losing support among Black voters, which means it’s time again to pander to the African-American community.
Democrats traditionally take Black voters for granted, and many African-Americans are pretty upset at the moment that Democrats are prioritizing the needs of illegal immigrants over the needs of economically disadvantaged American citizens. Who can blame them?
So expect to see prominent Black Democrats hit the airwaves in the coming months explaining why Biden is the only person standing in the way of Republicans denying African-Americans the right to vote.
Biden will also start making speeches again in Black churches reminding congregants they “ain’t Black” if they don’t vote for him.
He’ll say all the right things, and then, once the election is over, Democrats can get back to taking the Black vote for granted.
Biden has to be careful, however, with all this pandering, because he also has to transform himself back into a moderate in time for the November election.
It’s a real balancing act when you think about it. Only a politician as shameless and devoid of principle as Biden can pull it off. Not to worry, though. Biden has been the master political chamelion for more than half a century.
Biden’s real ace in the hole is, and always has been, Donald Trump. We can expect Democrats to invoke Trump’s name for years to come. Whatever the topic, whatever the argument being made by Republicans, the response by Democrats will always begin, “Oh yeah, well Donald Trump … ” — you fill in the blank.
Biden knows — or at least his caretakers know — the American people have no real affection for the president or his policies, but there also are millions of Americans passionate in their animus for Trump.
Democrats are counting on that animus to help Biden carry the day, and Republicans seem only too happy to oblige by once again making Trump their nominee.
Which means, come November, all of Biden’s pandering is likely to pay off. When that happens, Republicans will have no one to blame but themselves.
