I wash my hair with Fairy and don’t bother with a conditioner… trolls warn I’m ‘damaging’ my locks but I swear by it
A MUM has hit back at the trolls who insist that using Fairy washing-up liquid is ”damaging” for her hair.
The market may be full of what feels like a never-ending choice of shampoos – and even Olaplex dupes – but one mum, only known as Docherty, swears by pouring dish soap on her long locks instead.
Yes, that’s right – according to Docherty, she’s been doing this for as long as she can remember, and she doesn’t spend money on conditioners either.
Taking to TikTok, the parent noted that there’s a major benefit to ditching regular drugstore shampoos from the high street from time to time- and her dark hair seems to love it.
”I use Fairy Liquid once a week, yes. Why? Hardens your hair,” she demonstrated in the video.
”Yes, it really does harden your hair.”
As well as giving her long locks a wash with the kitchen essential, Docherty will also sometimes use normal shampoo – however, a conditioner is a no-no in her haircare routine.
Sharing her reasoning behind this step, Docherty explained that conditioners make ”your hair fall out”.
When it comes to giving her hair some TLC, the mum also swears by a special serum that allegedly makes the locks ”thicker”.
But although Docherty may indeed have long, Rapunzel-like hair, not everyone agreed with the washing-up liquid hack.
Dozens of concerned social media users flocked to comments to warn the mum about using Fairy on her locks, with one saying it will do more bad than good.
”Damages hair not strengthens it.”
Someone else agreed, adding: ”Only problem with that it strips the dye out your hair and I’m grey enough as it is.”
”No, don’t use fairy liquid, it’s really bad for your hair,” someone else warned.
”Washing up liquid ruins hair, it’s a well known fact,” a fellow TikTok user chimed in.
However, there were also plenty of those, who just like Docherty, swore by this haircare method.
”When I was younger my mum used fairy liquid and fabric softener on my hair, it was actually so shiny and healthy,” one said.
Another beauty lover claimed: ”I also wash my hair with fairy and it grows my hair so quick and healthy.”
A third insisted: ”It’s actually very good for dandruff.”
”Swear by, this me mam always used to wash me hair in fairy & I still do it now with my kids,” a fellow mother added.
After taking the internet by storm and being met by critics, Docherty also hit back at the meanies who claimed her locks will get damaged this way.
Showing off her long hair in a stunning plait, the mum said: ”i’ve used Fairy Liquid all of my life.
”It’s not damaged – it’s very strong. Yes, very strong.”
Can you use washing-up liquid on your hair?
Although using your regular Fairy – or any other dish soap – on your hair won’t kill you, experts have advised to steer clear from this household cleaning product.
According to Carine Mbembi Whyte from Afro Hair Candy, the high levels of alkali will cause your locks to feel incredibly dry afterwards.
”The alkalinity of soap strips all the oil and dirt of any material it lands on, including skin, but without being diluted will leave your hair like straw, swiftly followed by severe hair loss in the days following its use.”
What’s more, the formula can also strip away any dye from the hair strands, as explained by Huffington Post.
