Packing pro reveals why you should always travel with hand luggage – and it’s nothing to do with the cost
A PACKING pro has revealed why travelling with hand luggage is perfect for flyers who overpack.
Sorting out how much you can squeeze into a suitcase can be stressful even for the most experienced flyers.
However, for those who tend to overpack, it can be a nightmare.
Kayleen Kelly, professional organiser, recommends travellers keep it simple when prepping their holidays.
“If you are travelling to multiple locations on your trip I definitely recommend keeping it simple with a carry-on only,” she said.
She added: “Lugging multiple, large cases around and having to repack many times can cause a lot of stress.”
But the travellers who struggle to decide what to bring or genuinely want to dress up while travelling and can’t fit all their clothes into a carry-on should check in a bag and bring a carry-on, according to packing expert, Harmony Obasi.
Obasi, like many other travellers, tried to fit everything into just one carry-on.
But he quickly realised a single backpack for an international trip wasn’t cutting it.
He said: “I was carrying around this 40-pound backpack through the airport.
“My back was killing me.
“So then I transitioned over to doing one checked bag and one carry-on.”
This was the winning combination for Obasi, as he was able to fit all the clothes he wanted to bring and wasn’t lugging around a heavy backpack through the airport.
When considering how much you should pack in your suitcase think about the logistics of dragging it around and if you’re in the position to haul it up a flight of stairs.
How much should you pack?
There is no perfect guide for how much clothes you should pack for an international trip.
It will depend on the climate and the types of activities you will do when you get to your destination.
Obasi packs two outfits per day for his trips and brings fancier clothes for his nighttime activities.
However, Kelly recommends packing a week’s worth of clothing and then finding ways to wash your clothes when abroad.
Many hotels have laundry services or you can bring hand-wash laundry tabs to wash in the sink and hang dry,” Kelly explained.
Travellers can combine both of their methods by packing two outfits a day for a week’s worth of travelling.
Bringing interchangeable outfits is another way to extend the life of the clothes you’ve packed, according to the packing experts.
“My best tip is for you to pack all within a certain colour palette,” Kelly said.
She added: “This allows you to bring less but mix and match to create more looks.”
