Best Costume Design: “Poor Things”
Ray Richmond: Can I switch back to Emma?
Christopher Tsang: Poor Things is All Quiet on the Western Front last year
Marcus James Dixon: Thanks to the order of the categories, we have three in a row for “Poor Things” and still nothing for “Oppenheimer.” It’s wild the producers don’t organize the categories in a better way to keep things fresh.
Ceremony Thoughts:
Charlie Bright: JOHN CENA can do no wrong
Rob Licuria: I take it back. This John Cena bit is so freakin’ great!!!
Christopher Tsang: Also why is Cillian Murphy in the third row??
Rob Licuria: Zero energy and flat. Why? What is making it like this?
Tony Ruiz: This show has zero energy.
Best Production Design: “Poor Things”
Ray Richmond: Just thought I’d mention Oppenheimer’s win total so far is zero.
Best Makeup and Hairstyling: “Poor Things”
Marcus James Dixon: Kazu (“Maestro”) has two already. He’ll be okay!
Ceremony Thoughts:
Rob Licuria: Please fire the director of this Oscar telecast!
Billie Eilish and FINNEAS performance of “What Was I Made For?” (“Barbie”):
Rob Licuria: That performance by Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell was SPECTACULAR. What a song!
Marcus James Dixon: Billie Eilish is about to win her second songwriting Oscar at 22 years old. Somewhere in that room, Diane Warren is flamin’ hot.
Best Original Screenplay and Best Adapted Screenplay: “Anatomy of a Fall” and “American Fiction”
Ray Richmond: Cord won a lot of fans with that speech.
Marcus James Dixon: “American Fiction” skyrocketed in Gold Derby’s screenplay predictions after it won at BAFTA. The importance of precursors!
Rob Licuria: Adapted Screenplay was such a stacked category. Wow. And that clip montage really reinforced that!
Joyce Eng: they should play P.I.M.P. for every win
Luca Giliberti: Incredible clips for the screenplay nominees.
Daniel Montgomery: I hate it when bad banter happens to funny people. Octavia Spencer and Melissa McCarthy’s Chippendale’s banter just wasn’t cutting it
Ceremony Thoughts:
Marcus James Dixon: First laugh-out-loud joke of the evening: “At what age do you tell a screenplay it was adapted?” Just brilliant.
Charlie Bright: Is that David Alan Grier doing the announcing?
Best Animated Feature and Best Animated Short: “The Boy and the Heron” and “WAR IS OVER! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko”
Marcus James Dixon: Snobbery won out in Best Animated Feature. “Across the Spider-Verse” was one of my favorites of the year but it felt too “blockbustery” to prevail at the Oscars.
Rob Licuria: BAFTA was more predictive than PGA this time for Animated Feature
Charlie Bright: I don’t understand why at least Toshio Suzuki wasn’t there.
Paul Sheehan: More no shows for acceptance speeches will speed up the evening
Ceremony Thoughts:
Rob Licuria: I’m not a fan of watching clips of the ten BP nominees. Zzzzz.
Best Supporting Actress: Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”):
Marcus James Dixon: Da’Vine’s speech was completely mesmerizing — wow! When I saw “The Holdovers” last year I wasn’t sure her performance was big enough to win. I’m so glad to be wrong.
Tony Ruiz: That was about as perfect an acceptance speech as one can hope for
Ray Richmond: No notes!
Luca Giliberti: I do miss the clips, but seeing the nominees so moved by their introductions was wonderful.
Rob Licuria: It’s great to see Regina King emerge back into the spotlight where she belongs
Jimmy Kimmel’s Opening:
Daniel Montgomery: I feel like this opening monologue is kinda dragging. Not bad, but I just want to get on with the show
Denton Davidson: The show started almost 10 minutes late…off to a rocky start!
