‘I couldn’t walk down the street’ admits Coronation Street star legend after ‘terrifying’ experience with soap fan
A CORONATION Street star has recalled the moment she ‘couldn’t walk down the street’ after a ‘terrifying’ experience with a fan.
The actress has graced our screens for more than two decades as Eileen Grimshaw on the soap since 2000.
Sue Cleaver joined Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer on Channel 4‘s Sunday Brunch where she opened up about her early days of fame.
Simon asked: “Your first episode when it was broadcast, that next day, your life changes. All of a sudden, you’re not Sue Cleaver who’s been able to walk around with anonymity, suddenly you’re Eileen!”
Sue agreed with Simon and admitted that she wasn’t ‘prepared’ with what came with being famous.
She added: “I don’t think I was prepared. I mean they do talk to you when you go in. When I went in, TV was a very different world. You couldn’t walk down the street.”
The actress confessed that she didn’t feel ‘comfortable with it’ and that she had a hard time coming to terms with the amount of attention she received.
She continued: “It was the bit that, honestly, I struggled with for a long time. I didn’t feel comfortable with it.”
Sue added that it took her while to get used to being famous.
The star added: “Whereas now, a lot of people now just want to be famous, so it’s a very different world.

She continued: “It really terrified me! It took a while but, yeah.”
Later on in the episode, Sue spoke about her new appearance, as Mother Superior in the stage production Sister Act: The Musical.
