Don’t throw out your old toilet paper tubes – try my trick with them to get your garden growing, it’s free
UNLIKE a dog, a gardening guru proved that he indeed had a new trick for an old toilet paper roll.
The tip was not only free but also environmentally friendly and easy enough for any beginning gardener to try.
“DMR Bushcraft with another garden hack for you. We got our old toilet paper tubes, don’t throw them away. Use them as a planter for your garden,” said Michael Robinson (@dmrbushcraft).
His old tube was about to get a new purpose in life as he filled it up with three large fistfuls of dirt.
“Press in your ends so that it stays inside the tube and then plant your seeds,” he said.
He added his own seed to the top of the new dirt-filled tube.
Michael then added one more layer of dirt and pressed firmly to cover the seed.
He also had another tip up his gardening sleeve to keep everything organized.
“You can get a Sharpie and write what you planted on the outside,” he said.
Michael was certainly pleased with his tube-using task.
“And it’s a nice tall container, doesn’t have a bottom, so your taproot can go through and you can plant your sprouts after you’ve gotten going in the ground,” he said.
There was also no need to worry about waste being left behind.
“Toilet paper tube will just decompose,” he said.
He showed his own trays of sprouting seedlings which were already flourishing in the sunlight by the window.
His fans were also loving how the roll was able to be reborn.
“That’s a great hack!” said one follower.
“This is so great in so many ways,” said another viewer.
“Yes and no. It’s free starter pots, but they do mold if you don’t plant a few weeks after sprouting,” he said.
Still, everything would turn out just fine if you followed his advice.
According to eatingwell.com, toilet paper rolls are a cost-effective alternative to using starter pots.
Aside from just saving money, they are good for the environment and once the seedlings start to grow, they can be easily transported to your garden or even a larger pot.
