Childhood friends say Katie Britt 'did everything right' — until she turned to Trump
Childhood friends of Republican Sen. Katie Britt think she did everything right for her political career in Alabama — until she became pro-Donald Trump.
Speaking to MSNBC on Monday, Republican strategist Rina Shah revealed that her husband grew up with Britt in Alabama.
"Senator Britt has definitely lost rising star status here, which is sad for her," said Shah. "My husband and many people knew her growing up in Alabama and said this is somebody who kind of did everything right. Clearly, what she's done here is prostrate at the altar of Donald Trump, and it will keep her out of rooms in which she really could have opened the door to herself."
Britt's performance in Thursday night's GOP rebuttal of President Joe Biden's State of the Union was widely mocked — including in a Saturday Night Live segment. She was also shown to have elaborated a horrific story about a sex-trafficked woman that laid blame on Biden's border policies. It was debunked by a reporter who revealed the victim was trafficked in Mexico and that it happened during George W. Bush's administration.
"The thing that stuck out the most was she didn't use any data points," Shah continued. "Of course, storytelling is the core of what all of us political communicators have told our clients to do over the years. In speech writing, it was central to me. I think now what she needed to do in that response, and what she fell flat on doing, was to speak about how Trump can make everybody's lives better than that of Biden."

Shah explained that Biden gave a lot of "strong data points" in his State of the Union address that can't be contested. Britt followed with nothing.
"What she followed with was absolutely — it felt like nonsense at moments, and I don't think it appealed to anyone because it was confusing at times," she explained. "And also, at the end of the day, who was it intended to drive out? It was intended to get to the heart of the base, but that's just not the name of the game here."
