Pundit backs Tottenham’s rumoured pursuit of ‘outstanding’ winger
Alan Hutton is not surprised to hear that Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Jaden Philogene, with the former Spurs full-back of the belief that the Hull City star has what it takes to succeed at the highest level.
Philogene has won many admirers with his impressive displays in the Championship since swapping Aston Villa for Hull last summer.
The winger is having an outstanding campaign for Liam Rosenior’s men, spearheading their quest for promotion, having scored eight goals and provided six assists in 22 league games so far (Transfermarkt).
It was reported by TEAMtalk last week that Tottenham are one of several top-flight sides looking at the youngster ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the report also revealed that Aston Villa inserted a £15m buy-back clause for the winger when they sold him to Hull last summer.
Just a couple of days ago, The Daily Mail’s Tom Collomosse claimed that Spurs might have a competition to contend with from abroad, with Ajax alleged to be monitoring the winger’s performances.
Jaden Philogene is worth a look for Spurs
Hutton admitted that he was surprised when Villa let Philogene go last season, remarking that the youngster has the physical and technical attributes to succeed at the top.
When asked about the reports linking the Hull man with a move to Tottenham, the pundit told Football Insider: “I think you need to look at young and experienced players. There has to be a balance.
“He ticks a lot of boxes and I don’t think Villa should have let him go, to be honest. His performances have been outstanding, absolutely amazing, so they can look to the future.
“To bring in a young and hungry player who works hard and has the technical ability to fit into their way of thinking is good moving forward. But you need to add that quality right now. It’s about getting that mixture right.”

Following Tottenham’s failed attempt to sign Nusa in January, we know that Postecoglou wants to add another top-quality winger to his squad.
It will be interesting to see if Spurs go back in for the Norwegian in the summer or if they decide to turn their attention to other young wide players such as Philogene or Roony Bardghji.
