'Deserved an Oscar': SOTU rebuttal expert crowns Katie Britt's 'absolutely the worst'
Larry Sabato, the founder and director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics, was mystified by Sen. Katie Britt's (R-AL) response to President Joe Biden's State of the Union address.
Appearing on CNN Monday, Sabato mocked Britt not just for her widely criticized delivery, but also for her misleading story about a sex trafficking victim whom she wrongly implied suffered abuse during Biden's presidency, when in reality her ordeal came during former President George W. Bush's administration.
"Katie Britt deserved an Oscar for most misleading performance ever," Sabato said. "I've watched almost all the responses to the State of the Union Address since they started in 1966. This is absolutely the worst, not just in terms of that awful anecdote, but also her presentation."
He then questioned how a United States senator with an apparently experienced staff could be allowed to give such a disastrous performance that opened her up for instant ridicule on Saturday Night Live.

"I don't know who trained her to speak that way or to vary her emotions and in such extremes," he marveled. "Most people cite poor old Senator Marco Rubio as having the worst State of the Union response a few years back because he reached for a water bottle off camera because he was parched. That's nothing compared to what she did."
Fellow CNN panelist Margaret Hoover defended Britt by saying that, behind the scenes, she's far more thoughtful and knowledgeable than what she showed during her primetime speech. Rather, said Hoover, Britt's performance showed the malign influence that former President Donald Trump has had on the party.
Sabato, however, was not in a forgiving mood.
"I don't think that exonerates Katie Britt or any of the others who endorsed Donald Trump and repeat his lines, knowing full well how misleading, how often horrific he is," he emphasized. "It doesn't exonerate them."
