CT man charged with driving wrong way, DUI after crashing into construction zone on I-95
A Fairfield man crashed into a construction zone driving the wrong way on Interstate 95 in Westport while allegedly under the influence of alcohol on Sunday, state police said.
State troopers responded to reports of a driver heading north in the southbound lanes of I-95 near Exit 16 about 3:15 a.m. Sunday, according to Connecticut State Police.
Troopers found a Honda CR-V near the Exit 17 off-ramp that had veered off the road and drove about 400 feet through a construction work zone, state police said.
Troopers made contact with the driver, 22-year-old Cory Gomes of Fairfield, and noted that his eyes were reportedly bloodshot. They also reportedly smelled an odor of alcohol emanating from the vehicle, according to state police.
Gomes failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody and brought to Troop G barracks. He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless endangerment, reckless driving and driving the wrong way on the highway, state police said.
Gomes and a 21-year-old woman who was riding in the passenger seat were not injured in the crash, according to state police.
Gomes was released on a $2,500 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Stamford Superior Court on April 16, state police said.
