Arsenal legend says something surprised him when he met Vicario in the flesh
While talking about goalkeepers being leaner than they used to be in the past, David Seaman admitted that he was quite surprised by how slight a frame Guglielmo Vicario has.
Not too long ago, goalkeepers used to have a big, burley physique, not too dissimilar to centre-backs, with the likes of Seamen, David James and Peter Schmeichel all having such a build.
Tottenham’s own Fraser Forster is perhaps not far off that, with the 35-year-old being over 2 meters tall and quite muscular.
However, that is not common with modern-day goalkeepers, who are much more wiry figures and are more nimble on their feet.
That perhaps not only aids their agility but also helps them be a lot sharper off their line in order to be able to sweep in behind the backline.
Seaman was surprised by Vicario’s build
That is something Vicario certainly needs to be good at, given that Ange Postecoglou’s men play a particularly high defensive line.
While discussing how David De Gea has a small frame, Seaman said on his podcast Seaman Says: “There are a lot like that. Even when I saw Vicario at the (London Football) Awards last week, I was really surprised at how lean they all are.”
Spurs Web Opinion
As the influence of sports science has grown, players have generally become less muscular across the game, particularly centre-backs and centre-forwards, as they are required to be a lot more nimble and cover a lot more ground.
