Journalist says Spurs have withdrawn interest in 24-year-old midfielder
Gianluca Di Marzio has now poured cold water on speculation linking Morten Hjulmand with a move to Tottenham, revealing that Spurs have abandoned their pursuit of the Sporting Lisbon midfielder.
Hjulmand is having an outstanding campaign in Lisbon, with the midfielder’s stock growing substantially over the last seven months since he made the move to Portugal from Lecce.
Last week, the print edition of Record (via Sport Witness) claimed that Tottenham were on the lookout for a number six to replace Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp, and had set their sights on the Sporting star.
The report revealed that the Lilywhites had scouted the 24-year-old extensively this season and added that there was a ‘growing enthusiasm’ at Hotspur Way about the Denmark international.
Tottenham are no longer keen on Hjulmand
However, Di Marzio has now quashed those suggestions, revealing that while Spurs did previously show an interest in Hjulmand, the player is not on the North London club’s radar any longer.
The Italian journalist suggested that the midfielder could follow Sporting boss Ruben Amorim to his next club in the summer.
Di Marzio told Tipsbladet: “Hjulmand can follow Amorim, so we have to wait and see where Hjulmand goes. Amorim really likes Hjulmand, so wherever he moves to, Hjulmand may very well follow. Barcelona are looking at him.
“Tottenham were previously linked with him, but they are no longer interested in him. Barcelona, on the other hand, are definitely looking at him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While there is no doubt that Tottenham will be in the market for a defensive midfielder next summer, the club would have likely not settled on their top targets for any position at the moment. Those decisions are unlikely to be made until April or May at the earliest by Lange, Postecoglou and co.
