2024 Dorian Theater Awards announce key dates, expand categories
After stepping onto the scene last season, GALECA: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics, has announced key dates and details for the 2nd Annual Dorian Theater Awards. Along with important award season dates, the group announced a structural change: after only unveiling a list of winners for their inaugural kudos, the Dorian Theater Awards will move to a more traditional nominations and winners timeline this year.
GALECA’s theater wing will reveal nominations for the 2024 Dorian Theater Awards on Monday, May 13, 2024. Winners will be announced on Monday, June 3, 2024, to coincide with the start of Pride Month. To be eligible for the 2024 awards, Broadway productions must open by Friday, April 26, 2024; Off-Broadway productions must open by Sunday, March 31, 2024.

Nominations and winners will be decided by GALECA’s theater wing, a group of 36 professional journalists who cover NYC theater for noteworthy outlets. Like GALECA’s Dorian Film and TV Awards, the group’s theater awards celebrate both mainstream and LGBTQ+-themed productions. The Theater Awards will honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions.
The group is expanding the number of awards handed out to 17. Among the new honors are several categories specific to the Off-Broadway scene. There will be two new categories for actors, Best Lead Off-Broadway Performance and Best Featured Off-Broadway Performance, as well as a category for Best LGBTQ Off-Broadway Production. All of GALECA’s performance categories are non-gendered. GALECA has also added an honor for LGBTQ Theater Artist of the Season, which recognizes theater-makers of any discipline who have left a profound mark on the New York theater scene.
Last season, “Kimberly Akimbo” was the winningest show with these voters. The musical picked up wins for Best Broadway Musical, Best Lead Performance in a Broadway Musical (Victoria Clark), Best Featured Performance in a Broadway Musical (Bonnie Milligan), and Best Broadway Ensemble. “Fat Ham” was awarded both Best Broadway Play and Best LGBTQ Production. “Titanique” won for Best Off-Broadway Production, while its star Marla Mindelle won a combined acting category for Off-Broadway Performance. Other key victories included Alex Newell’s roaring number “Independently Owned” for “Shucked” taking home the Broadway Showstopper award, while J. Harrison Ghee was bestowed with the LGBTQ Theater Trailblazer Award.
