‘There is never that pressure’ – Carragher makes claim about Tottenham
Jamie Carragher has said that there is never as much pressure on the Tottenham players and manager to deliver trophies as there is at many of their ‘big six’ rivals.
While Spurs are recognised as part of the big six due to consistently finishing in the top six over the last decade and half and due to their financial might, the club have not tasted anywhere near as much recent success as many of their rivals.
The Lilywhites’ last trophy remains their Carabao Cup win back in 2008 under Juande Ramos, which makes the current trophy drought the largest in the club’s 142-year history.
Do Tottenham need more pressure to win?
Carragher suggested that the expectations and pressure at N17 to get over the line and deliver success are not particularly high.
The conversation happened on The Overlap, with an Arsenal fan suggesting that this season could still be considered successful even if the Gunners do not win the Premier League title.
That is when Spurs fan Flav from The Fighting Cock remarked: “Of course you have to win.”
Carragher then responded: “Isn’t that the problem with Tottenham? You’re never in a position where you have to win.
“It’s always ‘oh we’re Tottenham, we haven’t spent this, we have got Daniel Levy, or we haven’t got this’. There is never that pressure on Tottenham to win.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Carragher’s point is a fair one and that pressure of having to win will not be there until we get over the line and win two or three trophies.
Some Spurs fans feel that this problem comes from the top, with the club’s hierarchy putting much more value on getting into the top four than on winning the FA Cup or League Cup.
