Shafali Verma, a powerful hitter, took the lead with a scorching 37-ball 71 as Delhi Capitals showed complete dominance over Gujarat Giants by securing a seven wicket victory on Wednesday in New Delhi this guaranteed them a spot in the Women’s Premier League final. Table-toppers Delhi Capitals went into the match hoping to secure a straight-up berth in the championship game. The hosts got closer to their objective when their bowlers at the Arun Jaitley Stadium held the Giants to 126 for nine.
In Sunday’s final showdown, the Delhi Capitals are set to face off against the victor of the eliminator clash between the Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore. True to form, Shafali unleashed a barrage of boundaries, smashing an impressive five sixes and seven fours, guiding her team to effortlessly chase down the target of 127.
The Capitals sealed the game with a staggering 41 balls to spare. Shafali achieved her fifty in a mere 28 balls, reaching the milestone with a boundary over extra cover off Mannat Kashyap’s delivery.
The partnership between Shafali and Jemimah Rodrigues (38 not out) ruthlessly punished Meghna Singh, amassing 20 runs off her over, while Ashleigh Gardner was also dealt with harshly, conceding 28 runs in just two overs.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals’ bowlers put on a stellar performance, restricting the Gujarat Giants to a modest total.
Had it not been for Bharati Fulmali’s 36-ball 42 and Kathryn Bryce’s unbeaten 28, the Giants would have posted a significantly lower score.
In the ninth over, the Giants were struggling at 39 for 4, and things got worse when Radha Yadav made a brilliant catch to send Litchfield back off Mani’s bowling.
The Giants were in a desperate situation at 48 for five in the eleventh over, but 68 runs from Fulmali and Kathryn Bryce helped the team reach 120 and give their bowlers something to work for.
