An abandoned spaceship in Enid, and the local attorney building a case for immersive art
ENID, OKla. (KFOR) - The storyline is unbelievable.
"This is an abandoned spaceship," says Ben Ezzell. "It's basically a space truck."
The facts, according this Enid attorney, artist, and entrepreneur, are thus.
"You're walking into a work in progress, immersive art installation," he explains. "It's a mobile Meow Wolf."
Take a 20-year-old, Texas built, single-wide mobile home, and start replacing 3 bedrooms and 2 baths with the kinds of things you might find in a 'Space Truck', minus the missing crew and alien creatures.
"Bridge, weapons room, galley, lab," he shows us on a tour. "The scientists probably performed some experiments they shouldn't have and the aliens got loose."
Ezzell started thinking about this project a couple of years ago.
Another immersive art project he headed was closing down in a brick-and-mortar location.
He and his partners knew his hometown wouldn't support it forever.
"We're not an Oklahoma City with Factory Obscura," he states. "We only have 50,000 people."
He thought about building something that, but portable.
"The goal is to travel this around for a few years, and then, while this is moving around start working on another one to get more interesting art, more interactive art, to more places in our state."
Ben called it Itinerant Immersive and recruited a couple of dozen artists from all over the region to fill it with interactive gadgets, science fiction gear, and secret doors.
Come in to explore.
Then, in a couple of months, his space truck would take off to another town and a whole news audience.
"Enid and Ponca City," he mentions. "Bartlesville and Woodward, and all these towns that might not have something full time."
Ben's office and workshop are still full of projects waiting for build out and installation.
Itinerant Immersive has a late spring launch date.
Enid first for a trial run, then, with all the supplies on board, the universe is his oyster.
"This is just the first adventure," he smiles. "We'll see what happens next."
