Man United blown away by ‘outstanding’ 23y/o as summer move plotted, Arsenal also want him - report
Manchester United are weighing up a move for Columbus Crew goalkeeper Patrick Schulte ahead of the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Mail.
However, Arsenal are also keen on the 23-year-old who has established himself as one of the best in his position in the Major League Soccer after an impressive debut campaign in 2023.
The Red Devils and the Gunners have been impressed by his performances and are expected to be joined by other European suitors keen to lure the American away from the MLS.
Schulte helped Crew win the MLS Cup last December and has since been rewarded with a call-up to the USMNT and a cap.
Man United have scouted him extensively as they prepare for life without third-choice goalie Tom Heaton.
The former Burnley star turns 38 in April and could be let go at the end of the campaign after manager Erik ten Hag refused to sell him last summer despite bringing in Turkish international Altay Bayindir as cover for Andre Onana.
The Cameroonian has been in splendid form since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations in February following a tough start to his Man United career earlier on in the campaign.
However, the Red Devils still want someone capable of keeping the former Inter Milan star on his toes and giving him a run for his money, and Schulte, who has been dubbed ‘outstanding’ by Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy, fits the bill given his talents and huge potential.
He made 90 saves in 31 appearances last year, keeping seven clean sheets and conceding 43 goals.
A move to the Premier League would be tempting to the youngster, but he will likely prefer to join a club where he is guaranteed the starting berth and could snub Man United as a result.
