‘Big Controversy’: AB De Villiers blunt take on Hardik Pandya as the new skipper of Mumbai Indians
The five-time champion Mumbai Indians will be led by Hardik Pandya in the forthcoming Indian Premier League season. Hardik was acquired by MI from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash transaction in December of last year, and he was subsequently appointed captain. Though he won five titles with MI in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, Rohit will still be a member of the squad but will no longer serve as captain. The legendary South African player AB de Villiers commented on the unexpected shift made by Mumbai, stating that it caused “big controversy”.

“Mumbai Indians, incredibly successful team of the IPL. They have won (IPL title) five times. Big controversy over the last few months was that Hardik Pandya coming in as new captain in place of Rohit Sharma. They seem to be happy though. They seemed to have moved on. It’s great to have Hardik Pandya back in blue at his home team, playing for the Mumbai Indians. They will be starting against Gujarat Titans, how ironic is that,” said De Villiers on his YouTube channel.
On March 24 in Ahmedabad, GT and MI, the runners-up from the previous year, will face off in an exciting match. Due to the star all-around player Hardik’s departure from GT after two fantastic seasons—during which he won the trophy as captain of the team in their inaugural season in 2022—the match has garnered a lot of attention.
Shubman Gill has assumed the captaincy of GT, while Pandya will lead MI this time.
Beginning on March 22, the 17th season of the Indian Premier League will feature the first match between the reigning champion Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore at MA Chidambaram Stadium, their home ground.
The remaining dates for the tournament will be released later due to the impending Lok Sabha Polls, the dates of which have not yet been determined. The schedule has been made public up till April 7.
