I’m a teacher who’s naming my child after an iconic F1 driver… I just found out it’s also a laxative, I’m devastated
WHILE some people prefer traditional baby names, others opt for monikers that are a little more unusual.
But one woman, who thought she was naming her child after a famous F1 driver, has told how she’s been left “devastated” after only recently finding out it’s also the name of a laxative.
The anonymous mum took to Reddit and explained: “My husband and I have wanted to name our child Senna after Ayrton Senna the iconic F1 driver for years.
“We have always loved it, and dreamt about it.”
The woman, who is a teacher, goes on to say that her other half was actually the one that brought it up as an option which delighted her seeing as he’d never voiced any other baby names he’d loved before.
“I love it so much,” she enthused.
However, her feelings quickly changed when she learned from TikTok that it’s also the name of a laxative.
“I’m feeling absolutely devastated, and still unsure if I should change it,” she admitted.
“I have had some friends say yeah maybe not; and others say who cares I had no idea and not everyone is a nurse or a doctor.
“Still I am not sure.”
She went on to note how there are people named Senna and questioned how bad it really is.
The upset mum also pointed out that because she’s a teacher, she’s aware there are several similar common names, such as Sienna, but noted they’re a “no go” because of students or experiences with them.
It’s little surprise the post garnered quite the reaction, with a very mixed response.
“It’s REALLY REALLY bad*. Sorry,” wrote one.
A second agreed: “I heard someone had named their baby this and immediately thought “poor kid, named after a laxative.”
A third commented: “Sadly I’m an outlier and immediately knew Senna is a laxative/stool softener. I am not on Tiktok, so actually found that to be a bizarre source for people knowing of it lol.
“What about an alternate spelling, like Cena or Cinna. Though those are both heavy with other connotations.”
Meanwhile, another noted: “For me it would be a deal-breaker, but I guess it depends how common it is as a medication in your country.
“Would Sienna be a possible alternative? Basically the same name, just not a laxative.”
Elsewhere, others insisted that Senna is a beautiful name and admitted they would never have made the connection.
“I live in the Netherlands and know quite a few Sennas,” one person reassured.
“It’s very pretty and I’ve never heard of that stupid TikTok laxative. I know that’s not helpful but you’ve got good taste!”
A further added: “I agree with this! I’ve never heard of the laxative brand (I’m in US) and I think it’s a great name.”
