AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A study at Austin's airport found there are a variety of issues with the current wayfinding signs inside the terminal that will be addressed as the airport continues with its expansion project.
The wayfinding signs are those yellow signs that direct passengers where to go inside the airport for gate location, baggage claim, and ground transportation. The purpose of the study was to provide consistent standards for signage that will show clear messaging for passengers, according to a presentation from airport staff.
The analysis found a list of items that needed to be addressed:
Inconsistent lighting
Too much information per sign panel
Symbols and arrows too small
Inconsistent terminology
Conflicting placement with surrounding environment
The city is working to update its standards for the signs and will post it online. Those standards will then be phased in to the current signage and will be used for future signs during the expansion of the airport.
It not only applies to the wayfinding signs inside the airport, but outside as well.
"The journey the passenger is being taken into account as well employees from the bus stops," Jennifer Williams, the planning and design management officer at AUS, explained during the latest Airport Advisory Commission meeting. "I mean we're looking at every signage that is possible on campus and making sure it's put into the wayfinding standards."
