Experts slugfest: Our ridiculously early 2025 Oscar predictions
Is it too soon to think about the 97th Academy Awards? Probably, but we’re going to do it anyway. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to make their incredibly early predictions for the 2025 Oscar ceremony that will for sure miss the mark.
Unlike last year with lots of highly anticipated titles from legacy and A-list names, including “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie” and “Maestro,” 2024 is tad more sparse in that regard. The only incumbent Best Director nominee who is back this season is Yorgos Lanthimos, whose next Searchlight project, “Kinds of Kindness,” is an anthology. Will the academy bite? Speaking of Best Director, Denis Villeneuve is seeking a bid for “Dune: Part Two,” which was bumped from last year to this year due to the dual strikes, after being snubbed for 2021’s “Dune.” With a less stacked field this cycle, can he score a bid for helming the first big smash of 2024?

“Dune: Part Two” is not the only sequel to a past Best Picture nominee in the running this year. “Joker: Folie a Deux,” featuring Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn opposite Best Actor champ Joaquin Phoenix, arrives in October. The indefatigable Ridley Scott is back with “Gladiator 2,” starring Paul Mescal, 24 years after the original became the second highest-grossing film of 2000 and won Best Picture. And there’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” a spin-off prequel with Anya Taylor-Joy taking over for Charlize Theron in the title role. Will any of these films emulate the Oscar success of the previous installments of their respective franchises?
