Emma Willis opens up on husband Matt as couple present together for first time in 15 years
SATURDAY night TV schedules might be lacking in girl power right now – but Emma Willis is about to change all that.
I’ve recently told how what’s been described as an “unfortunate coincidence” means that, currently, the majority of primetime shows on air are fronted by male hosts.
But Emma will soon be back with a trio of big programmes — The Voice, a new, UK version of Love Is Blind for Netflix, and a second series of The World Cook for Prime Video.
And it sounds like all three are in more than safe hands with the popular presenter.
It comes as ITV recently added two more men to its testosterone-packed panel on The Voice, Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher.
Emma told me: “I think as long as you’ve got a couple of vocal, strong women there, it doesn’t matter.”
She added: “Yeah, The Voice is male heavy but hey — I’m there.
“Leann Rimes is there as well so there’s two of us.
‘Zest for life’
“It would be nice to have another woman as a coach, absolutely, but I don’t think it’s that they don’t want another woman, I think it’s just aligning diaries and making it work.”
Emma’s latest project The World Cook lands tomorrow night and saw her travel to Crete, Croatia, Turkey and Thailand with telly sidekick, Fred Sirieix.
The show sees amateur and professional chefs from around the globe represent their countries in a knock-out-style competition.
The duo sound like a perfect pair.
Brummy Emma said: “Me and Fred, we both wear the trousers — we do a great three-legged race, we wear them well together.
“He’s very much the professional in the cooking scenario but I like to think I am the palate of the viewer.
“When The World Cook job came in, I was like, ‘Really, me? On a cooking show, with my boring, Birmingham, palate?’
“The first time I met Fred in person was when we were filming for our very first episode together of season one.
“Fred just walked in with a towel wrapped around him, and he was like ‘ca-va! I just want to come in and say hello, it’s so great to work with you guys! I’m so excited!’
“As he walked out, he turned around and the towel wasn’t pulled completely tight at the back so you could just see his pants and his bum as he left. I was like, ‘I know I’m going to get on really well with him because he just likes to have fun.’
“Fred is so easy to work with — his personality, his zest for life, his unpredictability, he’s just brilliant.”
Viewers will soon see Emma alongside her real-life husband as new hosts of Love Is Blind UK.
Busted star Matt Willis was a contestant on Cooking With The Stars, which Emma hosts for ITV, last July. But this is the first time for 15 years that they co-host.
Emma laughed: “I can’t talk too much about it, but I think it’s going to be great. I’m a bit like ‘we don’t need to practise’. And Matt’s like, yes we do.
‘As Fred walked out his towel wasn’t completely pulled at the back so you could just see his pants and bum!’
“I guess we’ll see. If it goes badly on the first day maybe we’ll go home and practise then.
“We haven’t done side-by-side since Get Me Out Of Here! Now!, which was in 2008.”
While it’s nice to reminisce on those times, Emma is in no rush to revisit the cuisine from her jungle days — unlike Fred.
She added: “In The World Cook final, they had a surprise dish — deep-fried grasshoppers. It was a national delicacy for the place we were in, and I don’t think anybody was quite expecting it. I was like, ‘This is The World Cook, not I’m A Celebrity! so I’ll pass on that, thank you very much’.
“That’s why Fred’s a blessing because he just goes all in. He’s like: ‘Yeah, I’ll eat as many grasshoppers as you want!’
“We always have judges who have knowledge of a lot of cuisines, so that really helps.
“And we’ll always have a chef from the country we’re in, so we know how close authentically a dish is to the original recipe.
Dave's genius move
DAVID TENNANT has been confirmed as the host of ITV’s new game show the Genius Game.
It’s been likened to the BBC’s The Traitors and has been adapted from a hit South Korean show.
Players will test their strategic thinking and social skills to win £50k when it airs later this year.
