Emmys: ‘The Crown’ could become 9th drama series to win for final season
Parting is such sweet sorrow, particularly when it comes to Emmy voters. In recent years, the TV academy has given goodbye hugs to four Best Drama Series contenders for their final seasons: “Succession” (2023), “Game of Thrones” (2019), “Breaking Bad” (2014) and “The Sopranos” (2007). The only other dramas to land on this farewell list all hail from many decades ago: “Upstairs, Downstairs” (1977), “Elizabeth R” (1972), “The Bold Ones: The Senator” (1971) and “Playhouse 90” (1960). Will “The Crown” now become the ninth such program at the upcoming 2024 Emmys?
According to Gold Derby’s early Emmy odds, “The Crown” is way out front to win Best Drama Series for its sixth and final season. Rounding out the likely Top 8 nominees are “The Morning Show,” “The Gilded Age,” “Slow Horses,” “Loki,” “3 Body Problem,” “The Curse” and “Sugar.” Netflix notably split up the last episodes of “The Crown” into two parts — the first part streamed November 16 and dealt with the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), and the second part debuted December 14 and ended with the Golden Jubilee of Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton).
Season 6 of “The Crown” recently competed at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and SAG Awards where it lost the top race to “Succession,” which was on a farewell tour of its own. Despite all of the “Succession” love, “The Crown’s” Debicki did still manage to prevail at all three of those kudos for her haunting portrayal of Lady Di during her tragic final days. She won Best TV Supporting Actress at the Globes, Best Drama Supporting Actress at Critics Choice and Best Drama Female Actress at SAG.
It should be no surprise, then, to now see Debicki at the top of our Best Drama Supporting Actress Emmy odds. Her closest rivals currently are Lesley Manville (“The Crown”), Christine Baranski (“The Gilded Age”), Greta Lee (“The Morning Show”), Kristin Scott Thomas (“Slow Horses”) and Cynthia Nixon (“The Gilded Age”).
As for Staunton, she comes in second place for Best Drama Actress behind only Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”). Likewise, Dominic West as Prince Charles is the runner-up in Best Drama Actor to the current front-runner, Gary Oldman (“Slow Horses”). And Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip is in third place for Best Drama Supporting Actor behind both Billy Crudup and Jon Hamm of “The Morning Show.”
Fun fact: “The Crown” has been nominated for Best Drama Series for all of its five prior seasons, winning for Season 4 in 2021. That year, it actually became the first drama in Emmy history to win all of the top seven Primetime categories for series, lead actor (Josh O’Connor), lead actress (Olivia Colman), supporting actor (Tobias Menzies), supporting actress (Gillian Anderson), writing (Peter Morgan) and directing (Jessica Hobbs).
