Sports Briefs: Trojan golfers secure spot in postseason with win over Branson
Terra Linda clinched a postseason berth with Wednesday’s 216-226 victory over the Branson School at Stonetree Golf Course. Sean Madden took low medalist honors with a 39 for the Trojans (8-2), who also got a 42 from Derek Newhall. Aria Saluja led the Bulls with a 43.
“The MCAL has always been a league haves and have-nots,” Terra Linda head coach Steve Troya said. “Most years, we just hope we can get in the playoffs. This year, we seem to be a ‘have’, rather than a ‘have-not’.”
The MCAL tournament is scheduled for April 29, with the North Coast Section Division II tournament the following week.
• Marin Catholic’s Theo Anderson shot a 37 to lead the Wildcats past San Marin, 194-214. Noah Duncan was low medalist for the Mustangs with a 40.
Boys volleyball
Auden Baker had 30 assists and Beckett Shewey had 16 kills, three blocks, and three aces to lift Redwood to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-20 win against Tam on Tuesday.
The Giants (6-3, 2-0 MCAL) are one of three unbeaten teams left in the league through three game days along with Terra Linda and Archie Williams.
Outside hitter Wvan Wang had a 1.000 kill percentage and added 11 digs for Redwood while Jack Alley had eight digs against Tam (6-13, 2-2).
• TL and Archie Williams both improved to 3-0 following wins on Tuesday. The Peregrine Falcons (8-5, 3-0) posted a 25-14, 25-19, 25-17 win against San Rafael (0-7, 0-3). The Trojans (6-3, 3-0) went five sets for the third consecutive game, taking down San Marin (2-4, 1-2). TL faces its toughest league test so far this season when it hosts Tam at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Boys tennis
The Panthers’ Toby Sadzeck cooked up a double bagel at No. 1 singles to lead San Domenico past Stuart Hall, 5-0. 5-0 over Stuart Hall today. Sadzeck won 6-0, 6-0, and Gavin Kennedy and Parker Sadzeck also won singles matches. The Panthers’ doubles teams of Arda Kumbaraci and Harry Wan, and Alton Bender and Tuan Le completed the sweep.
Water polo
Archie Williams High goalkeeper Haakon Lacy and Marin resident William Mills were among the Nick Johnson Inspiration Award winners during the USA Water Polo boys Olympic Development Program championships over the weekend in Chicago.
Lacy is the honoree for the Youth Team and Mills is part of the Cadet Team, both representing the Pacific Blue Zone.
Lacy, with Tam High’s Reed Hanna, and Terra Linda’s Soren Jessen, were named to the Youth National team. Meanwhile, Archie Williams and Sleepy Hollow Aquatics defender Nate Greenberg joined San Francisco Water Polo Club players Mills and Ethan Wallace on the Cadet roster.
The Peregrine Falcons’ Jacob Carrera and Vincent Krilanovich, the Trojans’ Harley Haveman and Cameron Hellar, and Maddox McClellan of Redwood High were also in Chicago for the event.
The girls competition begins Friday in Riverside, with SHAQ’s Elizabeth Harlow, Gabriella Reichley and Anna Frey among the local players.
