Parents, teachers call on BPS for more police presence at schools
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Concerned parents and teachers are calling on Buffalo Public Schools, asking for more police presence and social workers inside school walls. This comes as student fights continue to break out district wide.
“We have had a fight at every single school, every single day,” said Pastor James Giles of the WNY Peacemakers.
"If we are calling 911 literally almost every day at Riverside I think we need a full time officer in the building, which we used to have,” said Riverside teacher Marc Bruno.
According to Bruno police officers were removed from inside Buffalo schools in 2021. On Wednesday he approached the school board asking for their return during times when fights are at an all-time high.
“What bothers me is when they did pull them out no one ever came to the school asking what do you guys think since you work here every single day? So that's very frustrating,” Bruno continued.
Parent leaders at the school board meeting shared that frustration.
“We're doing this same thing every day and not trying to solve these problems. We're not getting the resources into the schools that are able to help the students,” claimed District Parent Coordinating Council President Ed Speidel.
BPS responded Wednesday saying they are working with security partners to further strengthen all security measures at its schools. Which includes social workers, psychologist, counselors and resource officers.
Security however is only part of the solution. Wednesdays meeting was filled with mental health counselors and community advocates, asking the district to continue funding social-emotional support for students, which they say is the root of the problem.
“They might not have food at the house. They might not even know where they're going to sleep after school. When you check in with a student to see where they are, then you know which student needs the help. So restorative service is key and communication,” added peacemaker Carlanda Meadors.
The Buffalo Teachers Federation also scheduled a meeting with BPS to present solutions like added security to resolve safety concerns across the city.
That meeting between the Teachers Federation and the school superintendent is next week, aiming to put steps in place to keep schools safe.
