My 3-ingredient skincare paste snatched up my dark under-eye circles – I only need to use it once a week
A BEAUTY guru was fed up with her puffy under-eyes and dark circles before being wowed by the results of a DIY brightening mask.
She mixed three ingredients that most people readily have available in their kitchens to make the skincare product.
Maya May (@minimallymay_) has garnered almost 89,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares self-care tips.
She showed the process of making a DIY caffeine eye mask that tightens, depuffs, and brightens.
She poured two teaspoons of Nescafe instant coffee into a small bowl followed by a teaspoon of honey.
The beauty guru then added a teaspoon of warm water and mixed the ingredients until they became a smooth paste.
In a follow-up video, she showed the dark circles under her eyes before using a metal spoon to apply a thin layer of the mask under her eyes.
Many people swear by putting a metal spoon in their fridge before using it in skincare to create a cooling effect that depuffs the under-eyes.
Maya said she uses the mask once a week but it’s possible to gradually increase usage.
She recommended rinsing it off with warm water after 10 to 15 minutes.
Visible results are achieved after using the product consistently for three months.
“Snatched up my dark circles,” Maya said.
She added that the mask should be made fresh each time rather than storing a large amount.
She said the honey will cause the mask to harden if it’s stored in the fridge.
Thousands of people liked the videos and many comments racked up from those eager to try the mask for themselves.
“It worked for me my eye bags are definitely lighter,” one person wrote. “I did it for three days.”
“Is there an alternative to the honey?” another asked.
“You can try without honey but it will not be the same,” Maya replied.
What causes dark circles?
Dark circles may appear purple, blue, brown, or black depending on skin color.
According to Medical News Today, they are rarely a cause for concern but you may want to speak to a medical professional if they darken or swell.
Here are some of the possible causes:
- Fatigue
- Allergies
- Hyperpigmentation
- Vitamin deficiencies
- Underlying health condition
- Aging
- Smoking
“Do you apply this on a clean face or do you apply this under your eyes after you cleanse your face?” a third asked.
“I apply to clean skin,” Maya responded.
The eye mask recipe comes after Beverly Hills MD Cosmeceuticals published an article that said coffee can reduce the appearance of dark circles when applied to the skin.
The coffee’s caffeine helps constrict blood vessels to lessen the appearance of dark circles.
According to Healthline, more research is needed before honey can be considered a remedy for skin brightening.
However, the exfoliating properties in the sweet substance can be useful for removing dead skin cells that make skin look dull.
