The Awami Ittehad Party has decided to nominate its leader Sheikh Abdul Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Baramulla constituency in northern Kashmir. Rashid, currently incarcerated in Tihar jail since 2019 under the UAPA, had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency, securing 1,02,168 votes. The party's spokesperson stated that Rashid's candidacy is based on the constitutional right to contest elections for individuals whose charges have not been proven.
