BWI Airport set record last year for international passengers
BWI Marshall Airport hit a record for international passengers last year.
The number of passengers traveling on international flights increased to more than 1.3 million, up nearly 2.6% over the previous annual record set in 2018, state officials said.
Overall passenger traffic climbed to 26.2 million last year, nearly 15% higher than in 2022 and making Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport the busiest airport in the region. Officials expect passenger traffic this year to return to pre-pandemic levels. So far, airline seat capacity has exceeded 2019 levels.
Besides being an international gateway for the region, BWI has been an economic driver, helping to boost tourism, create jobs and expand business opportunities, Gov. Wes Moore said in an announcement Wednesday.
“We’re making Maryland more competitive, and BWI is helping us lead the way,” Moore said.
The airport contributes $11.3 billion in economic impact. BWI and its visitors generate and support more than 107,000 jobs throughout the state and region. Several key projects are underway to add new services, amenities and infrastructure.
New international carriers added in recent years include Copa Airlines, Icelandair and PLAY airlines. Southwest Airlines began new international service to Belize earlier this month. New carrier BermudAir launched service Monday between BWI and Bermuda.
