Experts slugfest: Our first 2024 Emmy nominations predictions
Will “The Bear” rule the Emmys even harder the second time around? What will succeed “Succession”? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their first Emmy predictions of the season.
It feels like the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were just yesterday — and that’s because they basically were. The delayed ceremony took place in January and “The Bear” dominated with six awards, including Best Comedy Series, for a total of 10 wins for its debut season. And for Season 2, it will have a shot at pulling a “Schitt’s Creek” by claiming all seven comedy categories at the main ceremony as reigning supporting actress champ Ayo Edebiri has moved to lead. But can she hold off the last two Best Comedy Actress champs, Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”) and Jean Smart (“Hacks”)? Smart is undefeated for the Max series, which returns with its third season on May 2.

Things are a little bit less settled in drama, where only one 2023 Best Drama Series nominee is eligible to return: “The Crown.” The former champ went 7/7 at the 2021 ceremony, and while it’s likely safe for a nomination, can it actually win again after a rather tepid response to its sixth and final season and after it collapsed in nominations for Season 5? With so many open slots, “The Morning Show” ought to finally be able to snag its first series nomination, while its leading ladies Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon should be able to get into Best Drama Actress together for the first time. But will they?
Elsewhere, we discuss what new shows could break out, if “Shōgun” is the one to beat in limited series and more.
