CCA’s opens final Out of the Box exhibition on Argentinian architect Amancio Williams
The Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA) has announced the opening of the third installment of the Out of the Box research project, exhibition series, and publication dedicated to the work of Argentinian architect Amancio Williams (1913–1989).
The installment will feature an extensive archive of proposals produced and reworked by Williams and his collaborators, including his wife Delfina Gálvez. The archive includes drawings, photographs, correspondence, and models, donated to the CCA by the Williams family in 2020.
The Out of the Box: Amancio Williams series, which is structured as a study in three acts, features Studio Muoto (Paris), Claudia Shmidt (Buenos Aires), and Pezo von Ellrichshausen (Concepción) as guest curators.
For this installment, Mauricio Pezo and Sofia von Ellrichshausen of Pezo von Ellrichshausen explore the domestic monumentality in Williams’s work.
The exhibition features technical drawings of monumental elements which are incorporated in two key projects; Casa sobre el arroyo (House on the river) and Casa Desmarás (Desmarás house) alongside other photographs and sketches.
“Architects’ dreams sometimes appear after their practice goes to sleep. There are so many illusions and fears, and only so much time for their visions to find a proper place,” reads the curatorial statement, in part. “A bridge, one of the most basic forms of infrastructure, can be a house, any house. An umbrella, one of the most elemental forms of architecture, can also be a house, any house. As long as the rain and the sun are kept outside, one could live in such a domesticated wilderness.”
“Both a bridge and an umbrella are mediation devices that enable us to live within the unknowable natural world. These idealized forms were recurring dreams in Amancio Williams’s work. His bridge design was only implemented in Casa sobre el arroyo [House on the Stream], and yet he drew it repeatedly, retracing a circular vector that transfers the loads through a curved plane,” it continues.
The exhibition runs in the CCA’s Octagonal Gallery until May 2024, and a book accompanying the series will be published in May 2024.
