Queen’s Park head to Somerset Park this weekend to face Ayr United for a fourth time in the cinch Championship this season with The Spiders looking for their first win.
The sides met for the first time in this campaign back in September and it was a good night for The Honest Men who raced into a 4-1 half-time lead before eventually winning 5-2 with Ruari Paton and Barry Hepburn scoring for Queen’s.
The second meeting saw Ayr on top in the first half again as they led 2-0 after the opening 45 minutes, however an Alex Bannon header (his first goal for the club) and a last gasp strike from Ruari Paton tied the score.
The third meeting took place in January at Hampden and a free-kick from Jamie Murphy had Ayr winning at the interval again. A terrific header from Paton from a wicked Dom Thomas cross brought Queen’s Park level however the Black and White Hoops could not build on that goal as Sean Welsh was dismissed shortly afterwards. Ayr used their numerical advantage well and grabbed all three points when Mark McKenzie netted a late header.

Skipper Dom Thomas shared his thoughts on facing Ayr United at Somerset Park.
The cinch Championship so far Queen’s Park sit eighth in the table after playing 29 games and Ayr United sit seventh, after playing one game less, in this season’s cinch Championship however neither side can discount being involved in issues at either end of the table. The Honest Men have 35 points, two more than QP, and they are showing the value of winning games as opposed to drawing them, especially as they have lost on more occasions this season. Ayr have lost 13 times in the Championship, once more than Queen’s Park, however they have won ten games and drawn five to amass their points. Queen’s have won eight times and drawn nine games and a look at recent records also confirms the value of turning one point into three. Queen’s are undefeated in their last three outings with draws against Airdrie, Partick Thistle and Raith Rovers but only picking up three points whereas Ayr have won two against Partick Thistle and Inverness Caledonian Thistle and lost one against Dunfermline to pick up six. Anton Dowds is the top goalscorer for Ayr with nine strikes, six behind Ruari Paton who continues to lead the way for The Spiders with 15 league goals and 20 in total for the season.
Squad News The injured trio of Ben McPherson, Patrick Jarrett and Grant Savoury remain unavailable with Head Coach Davidson hoping that a couple of knocks picked up over the last week will clear up.
