A new CT doughnut shop has already sold 2,300 on one day. ‘They are amazing,’ a customer said.
There’s a pink theme that can’t be missed.
When driving down Route 10 a pink sign stands out where the old D’Angelo Grilled Sandwich Shop was at 59 East St.
Then pink is everywhere inside and outside, just as owner and Southington resident Chanya Siboriboun wanted as she has opened My Mochi Donut Café & Bakery in Plainville.
This is Siboriboun’s third business in the area and it has been holding a soft opening since last weekend and the flow of customers has been constant. The shop sells mochi doughnuts, cakes, macaroons, coffee, tea, boba and more.
Siboriboun, 47, also has owned Somewhere In Bangkok at 1103 Queen St. in Southington for the last 18 years and opened a second Somewhere In Bangkok location, at 136 Simsbury Road in Avon, four years ago.
Siboriboun said she wanted to bring something from the bigger cities back home to Connecticut.
“New York, Boston and other big cities have mochi donuts. They are so good, and I wondered why we don’t have a place to sell them around here,” she said.
Mochi donuts are puffy and light and come in a variety of flavors. The most popular choices during the soft opening have been Oreo and Fruity Pebbles, Siboriboun said. Other flavors are strawberry, pistachio, M&M, and churro. They are standard in size and come in a bubble ring shape.
Southington residents Weslee Mize and Caroline Liu moved to town last year and made their second visit to My Mochi since the soft opening on Thursday morning.
“I heard about it from friends,” Mize said. “We’ve had mochi doughnuts before when we were living in Dallas. When we moved up here, they didn’t have them at all. We were looking forward to this opening. A lot of people may not have had it before and are trying it for the first time. I would have to say I think these are better than the ones we had in Dallas.”
“They are amazing,” Liu added about the doughnuts. “Especially when they take them right out of the oven. I think people are really going to like them. This is something new and fresh to so many people.”
Siboriboun and her staff have made about 1,000 doughnuts a day and have sold out each day. On Sunday, March 17, she made more than 2,000 doughnuts and they were sold out by 1 p.m.
“We’ve had a lot of repeat customers already,” Siboriboun said. “I’ve gotten so many good reviews and no complaints.”
Siboriboun is planning a ribbon cutting on Thursday, March 28 and the grand opening will be two days later.
“When you do something you love, the result comes out nice. I believe in that, and I love pink, and I love this place,” Siboriboun said.
The business typically uses six employees during the week and 10 total on weekends. All employees don pink hoodies.
“We’ve had days where the line was out the door this weekend,” Siboriboun said. “We sold 1,500 on Saturday and 2,300 on Sunday. The doughnuts are airy and not greasy or heavy. This is something new and exciting.”
Siboriboun and her co-owner and husband, Song, have two children and have lived in Southington since 2004. She is originally from Bangkok, Thailand.
