Gwyneth Paltrow, who has starred in seven Marvel movies, understands why audiences are bored with the superhero genre.
The Goop founder played Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) love interest, Pepper Potts, in the "Iron Man" trilogy, three "Avengers" movies, and "Spider-Man: Homecoming. So, she has seen firsthand how the genre has grown over the last decade.
But as superhero movies have become more popular and released more frequently, fans have started to question their quality. This has resulted in many superhero movies making less money than might have previously.
2019's "Avengers: Endgame," widely considered the high point of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, made $2.79 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. Five years later, "The Marvels" made $206 million worldwide. Of course, the two projects are a little different.
"Endgame" was a huge event movie after 10 years of storytelling, while "The Marvels" is a sequel to "Captain Marvel," "WandaVision," and "Ms. Marvel." Regardless, suggests that audiences are tiring of the genre.
On Thursday's episode of "Hot Ones," Paltrow was asked about Cord Jefferson's plea at the Oscars: "Instead of making one $200 million movie, make 20 $10 million movies."
Paltrow said: "I absolutely understand where he's coming from. You want the best chance to have a strong ROI. People put a lot of money into these things and they want them to be profitable."
She went on: "But if I look at the industry as a whole, this big push into superhero movies… You can only make so many good ones that feel truly original. And yet they're still always trying to reach as many people as possible, which sometimes hinders quality or specificity or real point of view."
Paltrow added that movies are less risky when they have a smaller budget and often lead to better results.
She explained: "You get more diversity of art when there is less at stake, and people can express their true voice and make a film the way they want to make it. Those are generally the more resonant ones."
Paltrow isn't the only Marvel alum to criticize superhero movies. Many have said they didn't enjoy their time working on the MCU.
In 2023, Dave Bautista told GQ: "It wasn't all pleasant. It was hard playing that role," he said. "The makeup process was beating me down."
Recently, the stars of the maligned Sony Marvel movie "Madame Web" distanced themselves from the film. Dakota Johnson told Bustle earlier this month: "I probably will never do anything like it again because I don't make sense in that world. And I know that now."
