03/22/2024: Cold & Quiet Ahead of Winter Storm
The Latest Storm Tracker Forecast from Meteorologist Kevin Appleby:
Aside from being cold again, there are no weather concerns into this afternoon with high pressure overhead. Our weather deteriorates this evening and especially into Saturday, with plowable snow expected for parts of our region.
Two areas of low pressure are approaching the News10 viewing area, expected to bring widespread steady precipitation overnight through Saturday.
Winter Weather Alerts have been hoisted for parts of the region, kicking into effect tonight. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect up to the north, where the highest snowfall accumulations are expected.
The big question mark with this storm is to where exactly a warm front will set up, with heavier snowfall amounts expected to the north. Rain and wintry mix are expected to the south.
While I anticipate most of region flipping over to rain by Saturday afternoon, colder air will catch up to the back end of the precipitation Saturday afternoon. This means a quick burst of snow is possible regionwide as the system pulls away from the region.
Over half a foot of snow is expected up in the North Country into Vermont.
Less snow is expected to the south, where a quicker transition to rain and wintry mix is expected. This storm has a lot of moisture with it, so rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are possible, especially southeast of Albany.
Drier, calmer weather will follow up this storm into the start of next week.
