I’m a dermatologist and take my anti-aging vitamin C use to the next level – it fights loss of collagen & pigmentation
SERVING the skin of New York City, one dermatologist has given her top tips for a flawless complexion.
Her anti-aging advice includes using products for preventing the loss of collagen, which typically diminishes over time.
Dr. Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD shared her skincare hacks exclusively with The U.S. Sun.
FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
She stressed the importance of antioxidants, which are proven to keep the complexion looking youthful.
“Environmental stressors, such as pollution, cigarette smoke, visible-light from cell phones, are another significant source of skin aging,” she said.
“They accelerate the loss of collagen and increase pigmentation unevenness leading to aged-appearing skin.”
As a dermatologist located in a city that isn’t known for the cleanest air, Dr. Nazarian is sure to pull out the big guns when it comes to protecting skin.
“Topical antioxidants like vitamin C can be quite useful when applied daily, but I like to take it to the next level,” she said.
“I take an oral antioxidant supplement called Heliocare. Heliocare has proprietary Fernblock technology that uses an ingredient found in a fern plant called polypodium leucotomos.
“I love it because it’s science-backed and proven to improve skins defenses against free-radical damage.
“I’ve been taking this supplement for years.”
Heliocare is available at Walgreens, $34.99, and is currently eligible for a 20% off discount.
The product boasts durability that topicals can’t achieve.
Since it is an internal supplement taken as a capsule once a day, it won’t wash off with outdoor activities like taking a swim in the ocean.
ADD TO CALENDAR
Sometimes, depending on factors like genetics, doing everything right just doesn’t cut it.
For this reason, Dr. Nazarian recommends keeping up with dermatology appointments for annual skin checks.
“Your best friend should be your board-certified Dermatologist,” she advised.
She said that annual visits aren’t just for catching skin changes that could result in skin cancer early, but could also maintain the aesthetics of the largest organ on the body.
“Having your skin checked regularly can ensure that you are doing everything possible to protect and preserve it,” she said.
“Regular visits to your dermatologist can also decrease the number of procedures and surgeries you’ll require to fix damaged skin later on.
“Everyone’s skin is different, and having regular checks with your dermatologist can ensure that you’re taking care of it the right way, and using the right products to best maintain it.
“As your skin ages and changes over time, your dermatologist can also adjust your regimen accordingly, like adjusting the strength of your retinoid or adding new ingredients that are tailored to your skin concerns.”
Dr. Nazarian also recommended sunscreen and protective clothing to prevent sun damage as well as lasers to promote collagen production.
