British skier dies after crashing into tree ‘to avoid group of people on slope’
A British skier has died after crashing into a tree at a resort in the French Alps.
The man, believed to be 68 years old, was reportedly trying to avoid a group of fellow skiers on the piste at Avoriaz in Morzine yesterday.
He hit the tree at high speed and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Daily Mail.
His death comes a month after another man died on the Swiss Wall near Champery in Switzerland, also part of the Portes du Soleil region.
The 47-year-old was attempting the piste – one of the world’s most dangerous – despite it being closed due to icy conditions.
He is believed to have fallen several hundred metres to his death on the ski run, which has a 37° average slope and up to 76% gradient.
The skier was the third Brit to die on the slopes in an 11-day period between January and February.
Yesterday, a bus full of Welsh schoolchildren travelling to a ski resort in the Austrian Alps hit a lorry on a German road.
Their school later confirmed no students or staff had been hurt in the crash.
