I fill my garden for cheap – my go-to plants are super low time investment and can even take a beating from my kids
A BUDGET gardener has shared the crops he fills his garden with.
He explained they’re low-maintenance, don’t require much uptake, and sturdy enough to take a “beating” from his playful children.
Brandon Koruna (@brandonkoruna) shared the gardening advice in a TikTok video.
“If your gardens to look fuller and you want to do it cheap, these are the perennial plants you’ll want to get and why,” he said.
Hostas, or plantain lilies, he explained, were “robust” and will grow “almost anywhere” it’s planted, even in cool Canadian weather.
An additional perk saved him time and money on buying seedlings in the future.
“Every year, you can just chop them in half and split them so this one and this one and this one are all the same plants,” he said, showing off the hostas seedlings scattered around his garden.
The seedlings even withstood rough play from his children, who tend to frolic in his fields.
“As you can see, these ones get the cr*p kicked out of them by my kids running up and down here and they’re still kicking,” he said.
The expert gardener recommended irises and Black-eyed Susans, which were also great crops to divvy up and re-plant after a year.
For a pop of color, he also planted pink flowered coral bells.
“Super easy to split, have flowers pretty much all season. I got one of these from my parents and split it multiple times,” he said.
The viral video gathered millions of views and over 300,000 likes as novice gardeners flocked to pick up some knowledge.
“Do they thrive on neglect because that’s what I need?” said one.
Brandon said the recommended plants were sure to deliver.
“You got it, super low time investment,” he said.

“Are these good for hot Florida weather?” asked one.
While Brandon tested the durability of the plants in the rain and sleet, he recommended specific conditions for the heat.
“Maybe in full shade,” he replied.
As to the best time to divide and conquer the plants to fill up the garden, he offered inquisitive viewers a time frame.
“I split them in the late summer, early fall,” he said.
