Albany "Clutter Boss" cleans up across the country with online program
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — One Albany business owner has reached over 30,000 clients through her online decluttering business.
For professional organizer Jes Marcy, Spring means business is blooming.
“Stuff flows in at the holidays, and then you set your resolutions. And by March or April, you’re like, there’s too much stuff in this house," Marcy said. "We have to let it go; we have to clean up.”
Marcy originally planned to be a lawyer but instead decided to pursue her passion for putting things in place, earning her Master's in Archival Science.
In 2017, she started her career as a professional organizer by tackling individual homes in the Capital Region.
“So, I quickly realized people need way more resources than just somebody sitting with them in their house," Marcy said. "They need a support system that goes beyond a single person.”
In 2019, she created an online community of thousands through her business, Clutter Boss. Program attendees learn from Marcy and trained "clutter coaches" on how to successfully declutter their homes.
Depending on their individual needs, members also have the opportunity to interact with experts in areas ranging from financial planning and nutrition to psychotherapy.
The virtual group promises to be a nonjudgmental and private space for participants.
“Clutter is really isolating. The more clutter you have, the more you tend to isolate from your family and friends and not let people into your house," Marcy said. "Our closest family members are not the kindest when it comes to clutter because they don't understand everything about it."
Marcy said her members' challenges are more complex than people assume, and overcoming emotional and physical clutter can improve many aspects of their lives.
"It's truly life-changing work."
The next Clutter Boot Camp starts on April 1 and aims to help attendees eliminate or donate at least 100 items.
