Match Preview: Greenock Morton v Queen’s Park
The cinch Championship so far
A perfect example of how tight the Championship table came at 3.20 last Saturday when Ruari Paton’s goal lifted Queen’s Park real-time place from ninth to sixth. Come ten to five, and despite winning 2-1 at Somerset Park, the Spiders had to settle for being seventh.
However, winning those three points, coupled with Ayr losing 1-0 at home to Dunfermline Athletic, has give Queen’s the chance to climb the table again by winning at Cappielow.
A three point haul would see Callum Davidson’s side climb above their hosts however that elevation (like any in the Championship this season where one victory can easily change perspective) may only be fleeting as Morton have played one game less than The Black and White Hoops.
The Greenock side’s season got off to a slow start however a powerful run from November to February moved talk from a campaign of struggle to a campaign of success.
Things have slipped back again recently however Morton manager Dougie Imrie will have been pleased with his side’s fine display in the Scottish Cup against Hearts recently where the Tynecastle club had to score late on to progress.
Morton still have aspirations of getting back into the top four place they had hold of early in 2024 and will view a win over Queen’s Park as providing a platform to help them get there.
Queen’s campaign has been one of looking down the way for several months now and slowly climbing the table. A win for them would continue that theme and a goal would be a good start towards that.
