GOP's Ken Buck replacement deflects on past arrest for assaulting pregnant wife
Colorado Republicans this week chose Greg Lopez as their man to replace the newly retired former Rep. Ken Buck (R-CO) in Colorado's Fourth Congressional District.
According to Colorado Public Radio, Lopez was appealing to many Republicans because he explicitly labeled himself as a transition candidate who would not run for reelection in the district this coming November.
And given some of the baggage that Lopez carries, some party bigwigs might be breathing sighs of relief that he won't be their nominee eight months from now, even if it means having to make scandal-plagued Rep. Lauren Boebert their standard bearer.
In a 2022 interview with KUSA reporter Kyle Clark, Lopez deflected when asked about being arrested in the 1990s for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife, and he said that he shouldn't be held to the same standards as Jesus Christ when judging what was at the time his candidacy for governor.

"There's only been one perfect man who's ever walked this Earth and we nailed him to the cross. I'm not a perfect man and I've made my mistakes but I've learned from them."
Scrutiny of Lopez's past arrest came due to his strict anti-abortion position, which includes no exceptions for women who have been raped or are the victims of incest.
In addition to his hardline abortion politics, Lopez also falsely claimed that the 2020 election was "stolen" from former President Donald Trump and pushed for a total ban on mail-in voting, which he said is rife with fraud despite lacking evidence to back up his claim.
Lopez in 2022 did not win his party's nomination to be Colorado's governor, as he lost by eight percentage points to GOP rival Heidi Ganahl, who in turn would go on to lose to Democratic Gov. Jared Polis by nearly 20 points.
