WATCH: Driver in Manlius speeds around school bus as a 5-year-old is trying to get off
TOWN OF MANLIUS, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A 5-year-old Fayetteville-Manlius student was on the bus and on her way home at the end of the school day, like any child would be.
But Ring camera footage obtained by NewsChannel 9 captured an incident that could've ended horribly.
As the child is going to step off the bus, and into their driveway, a gold/tan Toyota Camry speeds around the bus, along the shoulder, and blows past the house.
The homeowners say that this happened around 3:40 p.m. on Highbridge Road, near Candy Lane, in Manlius.
"My daughter is in kindergarten, she sits in the very first seat. As soon as the bus stops, she is getting off," explained the father of the 5-year-old.
The driver left tire marks in their lawn from where he sped around the bus.
In the video, you can even hear the car clip the mailbox.
"It is a busy road, people sometimes don't pay attention. This didn't feel like that," said the dad.
You can see the mother throw the hands up to her mouth.
He feels it was intentional, whether it was for the thrill of it, for fun, or simply not wanting to be stuck behind a bus as a kid gets off.
"But they absolutely could've killed somebody," he continued.
Luckily, the bus driver saw the car coming, and acted fast.
"We are very fortunate. The bus driver caught my daughter by the backpack as she was coming down the stairs," he said.
A few parents in the comment section have expressed their gratitude towards the bus driver. Some know her as, Miss Debbie.
Further, the video shows all other cars on the street stop with plenty of time and distance for the bus to stop, and turn on its lights.
The Manlius Police Department has been actively involved with this case, checking in with the family multiple times, according to the family.
Manlius Police told NewsChannel 9 that the bus had no outside camera. However, after some research, they believe that the car appears to be made between 2009 and 2013, and has a sunroof.
