Lingering showers, flooding still in forecast for Thursday
As lingering rain and storms head out of the D.C. area, will Thursday bring a glimpse of spring? Here’s what you need to know.
So far, April has truly brought flowers and spring showers. The most recent weather system this week led to heavy flooding in parts of the region, causing power outages and downed trees. Thursday promises to be a much lighter weather day, but the area is not out of high waterways and flooding territory yet.
A flood warning still remains in effect for eastern and coastal parts of Maryland until Friday evening, including the Potomac River along Montgomery County and Loudoun County in Virginia.
7News First Alert meteorologist Brian van de Graaff said while there could be “an isolated shower or two this afternoon,” those storm clouds will be “very few and far between.” He also clarified that the rainfall will hardly be comparable to the “deluge” of rain across the D.C. area on Wednesday.
“Over an inch of rain fell yesterday, today a much drier pattern,” van de Graaff said. “Can’t rule out a late day shower.”
Temperatures on Thursday afternoon will range in the upper 50s after a chilly morning. Skies will likely clear later in the day, but the cold chill will stick with winds blowing around 10 mph.
The potential for spotty thunderstorms with possible hail remains Thursday afternoon.
Coastal flood advisories are expected to stick around until late Thursday evening along the coastlines of Anne Arundel County, Maryland, plus the city of Alexandria and Arlington County in Virginia. Meanwhile, a coastal flood advisory along D.C. waterways is expected to stay in place until Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, flooding is likely, especially around the time of high tide.
A passing shower could blow through Friday; it will be windy and cool with highs in the lower 50s, according to Johnson. The forecast finally dries out Saturday.
