A Difficult Decision – Former Sunderland Star Announces Retirement
Former Sunderland goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter has announced that he is hanging up his gloves, despite receiving offers to continue.
The shot-stopper most recently played in the Danish top flight at FC Nordsjaelland, but departed at the end of the year and has been without a club since.
Ruiter, who was on the books at Sunderland between 2017 and 2019, has decided that the time is right to retire from the game.
He admits that he did receive offers from interested clubs, but none fitted what he was looking for and as such he is taking the difficult decision to call time on his career.
Ruiter wrote on Instagram: “A difficult decision, but I have decided to quit professional football.
“Still had several opportunities to continue my career, but the challenge I was looking for didn’t come along.
“A football life that started over 30 years ago has taken me to great clubs like FC Volendam, FC Utrecht, Sunderland AFC, PSV, Willem II, Cambuur Leeuwarden and very briefly FC Nordsjaeland.
“I have had a few setbacks, but most of all many highlights and in the end it has become a career I am very proud of! Thanks to everyone for the support during all those years. I have enjoyed it.”
Ruiter, 37, started his career at Volendam, but made the most appearances at Utrecht, who he played for before being signed by Sunderland.
