Experts slugfest: Will ‘Ripley’ and ‘Sugar’ put Andrew Scott and Colin Farrell in the Emmy race?
St. Patrick’s Day was last month, but this week is all about the Irish. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss two highly anticipated shows premiering this week headlined by two of Ireland’s finest actors: “Ripley,” starring Andrew Scott, and “Sugar,” starring Colin Farrell.
“Ripley,” which dropped all eight episodes on Thursday on Netflix, is Steven Zaillian‘s adaptation of Patricia Highsmith‘s “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and stars Scott as the titular con artist who murders and impersonates rich kid Dickie Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn). Shot in black and white by Oscar winner Robert Elswit, the limited series is a more faithful adaptation of the novel than Anthony Minghella‘s 1999 film and is basically an eight-episode showcase for Scott as Tom Ripley tries to get away with murder. After his “Fleabag” snub and a guest nomination for “Black Mirror,” is “Ripley” Scott’s ticket to Emmy gold? He’s currently in third place in the Best Limited/TV Movie Actor odds. And is “Ripley” gonna be Netflix’s ticket into the limited series race, the category in which the streamer is the reigning champ?

Scott’s fellow Irishman Farrell returns to TV on Friday with the first two episodes of his new Apple TV+ noir-inspired drama “Sugar.” The Oscar nominee, who’s in third place in the Best Drama Actor odds, stars as John Sugar, a suave private detective in Los Angeles who loves movies. He literally says this in the show. And old Hollywood movies at that, some of which are spliced into the series. A legendary producer, played by James Cromwell, hires him to find his missing granddaughter, but the case won’t be the main thing you’re talking about by the time the season is over. We discuss “Sugar’s” big twist — no, we don’t spoil what it is — and how that may or may not affect its Emmy chances.
Elsewhere, we discuss “Shōgun’s” big (and funny) death this week and Season 2 of “Loot,” wonder when Rose Byrne will be properly appreciated by awards groups and more.
