Ally McCoist claims Spurs have ‘no chance’ of signing Premier League star
Ally McCoist has laughed off suggestions that Tottenham Hotspur are plotting a move for Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.
It has been widely reported by various outlets over the last couple of months that Tottenham are expected to enter the market for a marquee number nine this summer (Football Insider).
A couple of days ago, The Sun claimed that Spurs are now considering a shock move for Isak as the Lilywhites are aware of Newcastle’s financial situation.
The outlet explained that while Eddie Howe would not want to lose the Swede, the Magpies might be forced to consider offers for him in order to comply with FFP. The publication added that Arsenal are also plotting a move for the 24-year-old, who is allegedly valued at £100m.
Should Tottenham make a move for Alexander Isak?
McCoist remarked that he would be very surprised if Newcastle let Isak go unless the centre-forward pushes for a transfer.
When asked about the speculation linking the striker with a move away from St James’ Park, he told talkSPORT (broadcast on 2/4; 6:27): “It’s not the kind of signal that Newcastle want to be sending off is it, because they’re meant to be on the rise, meant to be bringing players in, meant to be building.
“So, I would be very surprised unless Isak fancied the move that it would happen. He might fancy the move because he’s, without doubt, going to have a better chance at this moment in time of winning things, particularly the league, but if he wants to hang around for the project and it is a project, he’d have to weigh all that up.”
The former Rangers manager also asserted that a move to Tottenham would not really be appealing for Isak, insisting that Ange Postecoglou’s men had ‘no chance’ of signing the striker.
The pundit added: “It did make me smile when Spurs were linked. With all due respect, he’s not going to leave Newcastle for Tottenham. No chance! There are two reasons you go, to win things or financial security, right? That’s the two reasons you go, he ain’t going to Spurs.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Under the new financial landscape, with PSR being strictly imposed by the Premier League, Tottenham are arguably as financially powerful as any other side in the division, given the revenue the club generates.
Spurs would certainly be able to offer Isak a higher salary than Newcastle can. Having said that, I cannot see the Lilywhites spending £100m on any player this summer, let alone on a centre-forward.
