CKR Residence
CKR Residence is a minimalist home located in Sydney, Australia, designed by STUDIO—LIU. The project was driven by a commitment to minimalism and purposeful design, aiming to epitomize the ethos of ‘less is more.’ The design philosophy that underpinned the CKR Residence was deeply rooted in simplicity and intentionality, aspiring to stand as a beacon for sustainable and thoughtful living. Inspired by James Turrell’s masterful manipulation of light and space, STUDIO—LIU crafted a home that prioritized spatial flow and the careful arrangement of form, furniture, and materials. This strategy led to living spaces that were not only visually appealing but also suffused with a sense of calm and serenity, articulated through a palette of muted colors and subtle textural contrasts.
The brief had been straightforward: a young family of five sought a sanctuary of tranquility, mirroring the understated elegance of European design while blending with the natural surroundings. To this end, STUDIO—LIU moved away from the traditional reliance on decorative items, choosing instead to concentrate on durable, natural materials like marble, plaster, timber, and metal. This focus underscored the home’s commitment to longevity and stood in opposition to the trend toward fleeting design and decor. By adopting a ‘less is more’ ethos, the design rejected the idea that luxury and exceptional design must derive from excess. Emphasis was placed on the significance of functional, sustainable materials and the integration of natural light and airflow, creating a home that stood as a testament to purposeful design and simplicity.
This commitment to minimalism extended beyond aesthetic considerations to tackle practical issues of sustainability and waste in interior design, especially the challenge presented by disposable furniture and the environmental impact of mass production. In pursuit of a more sustainable approach, STUDIO—LIU integrated circular design principles, mixing vintage items with locally crafted pieces to lessen the environmental footprint associated with transportation. The selection of materials prioritized natural over synthetic and emphasized sustainable sourcing, from timber to natural stones, which not only improved the home’s aesthetic appeal but also contributed to a healthier living environment.
